UI and the Rest

With the Olympics in full swing many fans are visiting www.nbcolympics.com for updates and stories regarding the 2008 Olympics. In the tech blog world there have been many posts regarding this sites extensive use of Microsofts Silverlight product, in regards to the streaming video of events . WOW! That is all I can say, for now.

Okay, I have just recovered from two days at No Fluff Just Stuff. The NFJS conf is a very hardcore Java based conference, I went for the Groovy. Groovy is the shiznit when it comes to server side languages and it definitely gives people a free and easy way to communicate with the heinous beast known as Java. Heinous in the fact that it takes forever to setup and complains about every little thing.

Based on this conference I can tell you first hand that Java people are far different than UI or Web people. Java people are soooooooooooooooooooooo damn serious about everything, believe me they don’t get the ‘pull my finger’ gag. Read the rest of this entry »

Grails, the Rails framework for Groovy, now has a Flex plug-in available. The plug-in contains beta versions of Adobe BlazeDS and the Flex Webtier Compiler. What this means for developers is that Grails will be exposing services for Flex remoting.

‘Yeah, so what’ you say. Well, now you have a very powerful server side language in Groovy, based on Java, with an even more amazing framework, Rails, that can painlessly communicate with Flex. For more information I have included the following link:

Yes folks, that’s right. Flex 3 and Air 1 have finally been released into production as of this morning. This is great news for all of those folks who had a few days left on their Flex 3 Builder Beta version. Now it’s time to go Flex!

It’s funny how you can hear a song that you have heard so many times, and think nothing of it, and then it open your eyes all over again. That song just jostles something and makes you look at something differently. The song for me was ‘In the air tonight’, and it just slammed me upside the head with an epiphany, or a rant. So here goes!

I would recommend buying Google stock. I am going to buy 5 shares, hey buy what you can afford, and I will keep buying it every other month. They are coming out with some serious shit! Google - Android, it is their open source operating system for mobile devices. It’ s free to all and it’s for the mobile world,  and mobile is where people are going.  Ask the people around you if they dropped their land lines for their cells.  Who knows, maybe Google is part of the new world order (aka: Illuminati, Free Masons, Bilderberg Group, etc…) who cares. Just like steroids… it is working and providing the new generation with technology that can’t be beat.

In the end Google will make Bill Gates look like a pauper and have more control than windows. It is the future, and currently they are the ‘86 version of Jordan. Greatness awakening before your eyes. Mark my words… in five years people and companies will be using their products for everything that is networked!

On a side note… would Google ever buy Adobe? Hmm, makes you wonder.

Well I just started to mess around with Flex 3 (beta) and the ESRI Flex API v4 (beta) and found an interesting bug.  It happens when you are trying to use bubble markers.  Here is a sample of the error message:

ESRI Flex Argument count mismatch on mx.binding::PropertyWatcher(). Expected 3, got 2. 

I know it isn’t much to go on but I wanted to keep this post brief.  For the most part Flex 3 and the ESRI API play nice, but when you run into errors like the above you need to compile your app using the Flex 2 SDK.  A real drag, but it does get you up and running.  Hopefully the ESRI folks are starting to work out the kinks with Flex 3.  Because, in all honesty, ESRI provides some of the best mapping solutions out there, and it would be a shame not to be able to build Flex 3 mash-ups.

On January 23rd Adobe Evangilist, Ben Forta, of Adobe spoke on Flex 3 and Air in front of over 120 developers and designers in Cary NC. Ben remarked that it was the largest group he has presented to on the tour so far. Excitement was in the air, pun intended, as Ben went through Flex 3 features and inspired the imaginations of developers with Air.
